Do toddlers and luxury travel mix?

Short answer: yes—like silk sheets and sticky fingers.

Let’s be real. Before we had kids, luxury travel was all about that slow pour life. Quiet sunset walks. Infinity pools. Couples Spa experiences. Floating breakfasts we’d take 17 photos of before even picking up a fork.

Then came Nitai. And then, a year and a bit later, Lakshman. Two boys. Two beautiful hurricanes. And suddenly, our definition of “escape” changed forever.

The Great Parenting Plot Twist: Still Wanting Nice Things

You know what they don’t tell you in antenatal classes? That you can love your kids deeply and and still desperately crave plush robes, peaceful breakfast feasts, and the quiet kind of luxury that smells faintly of lemongrass oil (if you know, you know!)

Luxury travel doesn’t die when you become a parent. It just gets…reimagined. A little louder. A little messier. But still every bit as magical—if not more.

Gone are the spa days and lazy beach days. In their place? Tiny humans who now squeal when the private plunge pool isn’t the right temperature and sample the fine sand as their entrees.

We’ve learned to travel differently. But we’ve not downgraded. We’ve just upgraded our patience—and chosen places that welcome chaos with a chilled towel and a fruit platter.

The Evolution of a Luxury Family Traveller

When Nitai was a baby, we thought, “This is the hard part.” Lol. Newborns are easy. They just sleep on planes (obviously when they don’t and it’s a long haul flight…. 7 hours can feel like days!). Then they start crawling and enter that delightful “injury wish” phase where everything—pool drains, lamp cords, exotic insects—is a toy.

But now at 5 and 3, we’re finally approaching a golden zone. No nappies for the eldest. No prams (well nearly!). Just snacks, water bottles, and two mini-explorers ready to turn every suite into a jungle gym (and the occasional ipad!)

We’ve come a long way from panicking over nap schedules. These days, the biggest drama is someone getting the “wrong” shaped pancake at the Four Seasons.

Things That Work (Trust Us)

  1. Beach resorts.
Nothing beats it. Open space, warm weather, pools, pizza. We’ve done the Maldives, Dubai multiple times, Mauritius, Seychelles — name a white sand destination, and odds are we’ve left behind a trail of beach toys and half-eaten apples there.

  2. Kids’ clubs.
The holy grail. Don’t let guilt stop you. Your kids will forget your name the second they see a playground or a face-painting station. In an ideal world that would mean a win-win with us being able to peacefully sip our slush from the poolside. The truth, not quite yet, both kids don’t like to be left alone, but certainly keeps them engaged which means we are peaceful.

  3. Room service diplomacy.
We once booked a gorgeous beach villa. Nitai’s highlight? “The mango juice comes in a glass with a flower.” Taste is subjective. Let them live.

  4. Fly smart.
Forget the fantasy of watching a film on the plane. That’s over. We preload their iPads, bring sticker books, and make peace with whatever happens. If one of them naps, your 5 star holiday has started early!

  5. Tag-teaming.
Possibly the single biggest survival tactic: taking turns. One of us takes both boys to the kids’ pool while the other sneaks off to the spa (or even just to sit in silence—whatever luxury looks like that day). We’re not afraid to divide and conquer, even at a five-star resort. It’s not about doing everything together—it’s about making sure we all get a break.

Is it Still Worth It?

It’s different, of course. But it’s better in ways that catch you off guard.

Like seeing Nitai’s eyes light up at his first dolphin cruise in the Maldives. Or watching Lakshman try to befriend a 100-year-old tortoise in the Seychelles. The joy is infectious.

We’ve done city breaks. Island escapes. Towering Dubai stays where luxury starts the moment the elevator doors open. And yes, the rooms get trashed within minutes. But you know what? We’ve made memories that will stay with us forever—even if the kids forget them by next Tuesday.

I’m not going to lie, I still crave being able to go to the spa without being messaged as soon as my treatment is over that the kids are playing up, or being able to peacefully finish my breakfast instead of the kids dragging me away when they are done.

But……

There’s something deeply rewarding about sharing the world with your children. The places we used to chase for beauty, rest, and status—we now chase for connection, joy, and adventure.

Final Thoughts from the Jet Lagged Trenches

Luxury family travel isn’t about pretending your toddlers are tiny adults (though a few hotels expect that of them – more about that another time!). It’s about bringing them into your world—with grace, flexibility, and a mini backpack stuffed with biscuits.

So if you’re standing on the edge, wondering if you should wait until they’re older—don’t. The chaos is coming either way. You might as well be dealing with it in a private villa with a plunge pool and 24-hour room service.

Because honestly, nothing feels more luxurious than drinking a coconut while your child is finally occupied—and not doing backflips on the chaise lounge.

Welcome to the new era of luxury travel.

It’s a bit more chaotic now.

But oh, is it worth it.
