6 Things We Always Look For Before Booking a Luxury Hotel

We’ve stayed in some of the world’s most iconic resorts — and while the views may sparkle and the furnishings may shine, true luxury is in the details. As a couple travelling with two young kids (and a love for calm, design, and plant-based indulgence), we’ve developed a clear list of what really matters when we book a hotel.

Here are the six things we always look for — and why they make all the difference.

1. Modern Luxury Only — No Tired Icons

Some hotels age like wine… others age like milk.
We’ve stayed at properties that once felt modern, elegant, and thoughtfully designed — but over time, the sparkle faded. The rooms didn’t keep up. The design felt dated. The tech was clunky. What once gleamed now simply glared.
The truth is, even the most iconic hotels have a shelf life unless they commit to renewal. Design, experience, and energy evolve — and so should the property.

The Pleasure Principle

If a hotel hasn’t been refurbished in the last 5–7 years, check recent reviews for signs of wear and tear. We look for modern design, contemporary service, and updated facilities that feel current and cared for.

2. A Villa With That View

The first thing you see when you wake up imprints your day.

Whether it’s sunrise over the Indian Ocean, jungle treetops, or a skyline from the 40th floor, the right view doesn’t just impress — it lifts your mood. We want to open our curtains and feel something.

We always look for rooms with stunning views, so we can soak in the beauty the moment we wake up.

The Pleasure Principle

Don’t assume “sea view” means anything special. Always request view photos or a room map. “Panoramic” or “full-frontal” ocean views are keywords to look for.

3. A Real Spa Sanctuary — Not Just a Steam Room in Disguise

Let’s get this clear: a spa is not just a sauna shoved next to the gym.

We’re talking about a full wellness sanctuary — hydrotherapy pools, sensory showers, hammams, meditation zones — not just a room with a steam and sauna slapped on. It’s a space where mind, body and soul are renewed.

The best spas begin the moment you step inside: warm welcomes, herbal drinks, calming scents. Treatments feel intentional, the surroundings feel sacred, and you leave changed.

The Pleasure Principle

Look for spas with their own arrival rituals, unique treatments (like ayurveda or marine therapy), and wellness lounges. If the spa photos show only two chairs and a plant… skip it.

4. A Suite With Soul — And Perks to Match

We don’t book suites just for space. We book for experience.

A true luxury suite comes with elevated service and exclusive privileges:

  • Personalised butler service
  • Club lounge access with proper food and drinks
  • Reserved loungers by the beach or pool
  • Private check-in, flexible timings, and insider concierge tips

It’s about feeling looked after, not just upgraded.

The Pleasure Principle

Ask what’s included with your suite before you book. Some resorts bundle premium benefits, others make you chase for every extra. The best ones? They think of it before you even ask.

5. A Vegetarian Breakfast That Doesn’t Feel Like a Compromise

We don’t eat meat. We don’t eat eggs.

But we still want pastries, hot dishes, and indulgent options that make us feel like we’re celebrating the morning — not scraping the leftovers.

The best hotels create spreads that are plant-forward and generous, like:

  • Eggless croissants and pain au chocolat
  • Fresh fruit, yoghurts, chutneys, and savouries
  • Indian, Arabic, Thai vegetarian dishes
  • Barista coffee with plant-based milks

The Pleasure Principle

Call ahead to ask if the chef can accommodate egg-free vegetarian. The way they answer tells you everything you need to know.

6. Kids’ Clubs That Aren’t an Afterthought

Travelling with toddlers means we’re not just booking for us — we’re booking for them, too.
A luxury kids’ club isn’t a warehouse with toys and tired staff. We want:

  • Clean, well-designed spaces
  • Creative, sensory-rich activities
  • High staff-to-child ratios
  • Secure check-in/out
  • Outdoor play, cultural learning, and joy

The best kids’ clubs make our children want to go back — and let us enjoy a spa treatment or sunset drink knowing they’re cared for.

The Pleasure Principle

Visit the kids’ club before leaving your child. If the team seems distracted or indifferent, trust your instincts. The best ones become your kids’ favourite part of the trip.
